Chin augmentation- Chin Implant Surgery

Why consider a chin implant ?

Both men and women can genetically have what is known as a receding or ‘weak chin’. Sometimes orthognatic surgery is the procedure of choice to address this concern, if a patient is willing to go down that route and their teeth do not come together in the ideal fashion (malocclusion). In other cases, the desire is purely to increase the volume of the chin for aesthetic reasons. In the latter group a chin implant can be used to add volume to the chin.

What is chin implant surgery ?

In certain patients, increased volume or protrusion of the chin can result in improved facial harmony. Both surgical and non-surgical options exist to achieve an acceptable outcome. Non-surgically, volumising treatments can be placed on the bone, for a temporary solution. If you desire something more permanent, then chin implant surgery may interest you.

How is the surgery performed?

An implant can be placed onto the chin bone through a small incision just under the chin. This scar, being in the submental crease, just under the chin is not obvious and usually heals very well. This is a permanent augmentation of the chin, designed to bring balance and definition to facial proportions and assist in creating a strong-looking chin.

How long does it last ?

Since a chin implant is a solid implant, it is permanent. If you wish to have it removed, or replaced at some point, it is possible through another surgery.

Recovery

Patients generally heal well after a chin implant. There may be slight bruising, you will definitely have some swelling and potentially temporary numbness over the chin and the lower face area.

One week later

At the end of the first week the sutures under the chin are removed, and Dr Wetton will advise you regarding the best treatment for your scar. There may still be some residual swelling, this can take some weeks to abate. Dr Wetton will see you at your follow up appointment and she will monitor your recovery.
