Why consider a chin implant ?
Both men and women can genetically have retrogenia, or what is known as a ‘receding chin’. Sometimes orthognatic surgery is the procedure of choice to address this concern, if a patient is willing to go down that route and their teeth do not come together in the ideal fashion (malocclusion). In other cases, the desire is purely to increase the volume of the chin for aesthetic reasons. In the latter group a chin implant can be used to add volume to the chin.
What is chin implant surgery ?
In certain patients, chin implants can address concerns regarding chin volume or projection, with the aim of achieving a more distinct facial profile. Both surgical and non-surgical options exist to achieve an outcome that addresses these concerns. Non-surgical treatments can be utilised for a temporary result. If you desire something more permanent, then chin implant surgery may interest you.
How is the surgery performed?
A chin implant can be positioned on the chin bone through a small incision made beneath the chin. This incision is typically placed within the natural submental crease, aiming to minimise the visibility of the scar. While diligent wound care supports healing, it’s important to understand that all individual healing varies.
How long does it last ?
Since a chin implant is a solid implant, it is permanent. If you wish to have it removed, or replaced at some point, it is possible through another surgery.
Recovery
It’s common to observe some swelling and there may be slight bruising during the healing process. Additionally, some individuals might experience temporary numbness in the chin and lower facial area.
One week later
At the end of the first week the sutures under the chin are removed, and Dr. Wetton will advise you regarding the best treatment for your scar. There may still be some residual swelling, which can take some weeks to abate. Dr. Wetton will see you at your follow up appointment and she will monitor your recovery.
