Dr Wetton has performed breast surgery on many women of Asian descent, and is well versed in the unique needs and special requirements of Asian breasts.

Although women of Asian descent are all different, as no group of women are all the same, there are key factors in Asian breast augmentation which are important to take into consideration, such as:

Implant Size

Women of Asian descent are often more petite than Caucasian women, and it is important to honour body proportions, in order for a breast augmentation to look aesthetically pleasing.

Dr Wetton understands that small-framed ladies’ aesthetics are very different to those of larger women. A medium sized implant will look much larger on a smaller framed lady. Dr Wetton enjoys performing modest breast augmentations, which are used to enhance the figure as opposed to overpowering it.

Implant Shape

Although there are some women who request a round shaped upper pole, generally women of Asian descent desire more of a tear drop shaped look, with a sloping upper pole. For this reason, tear drop shaped implants are often preferred over round implants. Often women are not aiming for a large cleavage that is visible in clothing, rather they wish to look feminine and have a slope of the bust which is flattered by delicate necklines and fine jewellery.

Implant Fill

If you are a young petite lady, and you do not have much breast tissue, it is often useful to use a silicone implant, which already has a defined shape and can push the tissues out, creating both shape and volume. Implants with medium to high projection are particularly favoured in Asian breast augmentation. If you are someone who does have some breast tissue, or some lose skin, then this is not as necessary and you could also get a pleasing result using a saline implant, or an implant with a smaller projection.

The Pocket Or Plane Where The Implant Is Positioned

More often than not, young women of Asian descent have minimum breast tissue and minimum fat. For this reason, placing a breast implant over the muscle can look ‘stuck on’ or ‘fake’. It is in this instance that a customised dual plane pocket is utilised to create a smooth contour and aesthetically pleasing curves.

Scarring

Asian skin has a larger amount of melanin, which are the pigment producing cells in the deeper layers of the skin. This is what creates a darker skin tone compared to caucasian skin. This means that in Asian skin there is an increased chance of hyperpigmentation or darkening of the scar, after surgery.

Keloid scars are also more likely to develop in Asian skins and in skins that have a greater amount of melanin. By minimising the amount of skin trauma, we can decrease the chances of developing a keloid scar, however the tendency to develop keloid scars is also genetic and thus runs in families.

In times gone by, Asian patients were often keen on having a trans- axillary breast augmentation, where the cut is in the armpit. However, tear drop implants are not able to be placed through the armpit, and the size that the implant needs to be for this technique is also typically quite small.

With the introduction of the Keller funnel and more sophisticated scar protocols, the trans-axillary breast augmentation has gone out of favour. The infra-mammary incision usually results in a superior aesthetic outcome and a smoother recovery, while the trans-axillary incision is associated with a higher risk of infection, higher risk of capsular contracture, higher risk of malposition, longer healing time, more discomfort and sometimes poor scaring, because the scar is in a an area that moves every time you move your arm.

Dr Wetton will start advising you on her scar protocol shortly after surgery, in order for you to minimise scar complications.

Complications and risks associated with breast augmentation by Implant are not common, but are important to be aware of and include:

  • Capsular contracture (a firm scar tissue that forms around the breast implant)
  • Malposition (the implant moves, causing a distortion)
  • Rotation (the implant rotates)
  • Double Bubble (the breast implant does not sit perfectly in the breast mound, and there is a fold visible)
  • Bottoming out of the implant( the implant slides down)
  • Animation deformity (when your pectorals muscle contracts, so too does your implant)
  • Snoopy deformity/waterfall deformity ( our skin and breast tissue fall forward over the implant)
  • Breast Implant Associated Anapaestic Large Cell Lymphoma (BIA-ALCL discussed seperately)
  • Rippling (you can see the ripples or folds of the implant under your skin)
  • Haematoma (a blood collection in the breast pocket)
  • Seroma (a fluid collection in the breast pocket)
  • Damage to underlying structures such as nerves or lungs
  • Poor scarring
  • Infection
  • Implant rupture
  • Nerve pain or numbness of the breast or nipple
  • Possibly Breast Implant illness of BII (although this condition is poorly understood and is not evidenced by scientific literature, there may be studies performed in the future, which will give us further information regarding this set of symptoms)
  • Adverse reaction to medication
  • Adverse event due to a general anaesthetic

Frequently Asked Questions

How long will my Breast Augmentation take?

Your breast augmentation will take the same length of time as any other breast augmentation, usually 1-2 hrs. If you bleed more than usual, stopping the bleeding can take time, so it is important to refrain from eating certain foods and supplements that can predispose you to bleeding two weeks before your procedure. Dr Wetton will give you a list of these, but some include fish oil, ginseng and garlic. These products can make you susceptible to bleeding during surgery and stopping the bleeding takes a little time and may also result in a bruise.

Can I get my nipple or areola made smaller during the surgery?

Women of Asian descent can have dark areola’s and can often also have large nipples. It is perfectly reasonable to combine an areola reduction, or a nipple reduction with your breast augmentation, or your breast lift.

What if I do want to have a big sized implant?

Although large sized implants are generally not popular among women of Asian descent, if you are someone who does want to have a larger implant or a fuller, more projected look, please discuss this with Dr Wetton. Dr Wetton will assess your skin, your frame and your capacity for a larger implant, and she will give you the implant that you desire, provided that it is safe and will be appropriate after taking your measurements.

I want to have slightly bigger breasts, but I am really not keen on having any scar, what are my options?

If you are someone who wants to have slightly bigger breasts, but the thought of even a small scar has been a deterrent for you so far, you may have the option of fat grafting to the breast. If you have enough fat on other parts of your body, Dr Wetton can take this fat and inject it through tiny holes and place it into your breasts. There are some limitations to this procedure though, so it is important to discuss all the details when you come and see Dr Wetton.

Where will my procedure take place? and Will I be asleep?

Your procedure will take place in a licensed and accredited hospital and you will be completely asleep. Dr Wetton works with experienced and senior anaesthetists for your safety.

What if English is not my mother tongue how can I be sure that I understand all the risks and complications and what to expect from my procedure?

If you are concerned that you may miss out on all the details that Dr Wetton may go through during your thorough 2 hour consultation, please call the rooms to discuss this, because an interpreter can easily be arranged. Moreover, Dr Wetton will give you written information, which can be provided in different languages.

How much will my surgery cost?

Your surgery for a primary breast augmentation will be between $7,000 – $9,000 depending on your anatomy and what exactly is required.
This fee does not include the Hospital, Anaesthetic Fee or the cost of the implants.
