Browlift

Why consider a browlift

A browlift may be a suitable procedure for you if you have concerns about the appearance of your eyebrow and eye area. You may have noticed deep lines, a forehead that has dropped over time, low lying eyebrows, a change in shape of the eyebrow with age, or uneven eyebrows. Sometimes the first issue that is noticed is the upper eyelid skin excess , however performing an upper blepharoplasty alone, may not always be the best option and a browlift may be the procedure that gives the most aesthetically pleasing outcome in the upper face. Often a combined upper blepharoplasty and browlift is the treatment of choice.

What is a browlift

There are many different types of browlifts. Each are suitable for a particular aspect of the eyebrow area, or the desired aesthetic outcome. Depending on your particular desires and your anatomy, you may be a suitable candidate for a coronal browlift, a direct browlift, a gliding browlift or an internal browpexy. Depending on the particular procedure and your choosing, results can be either subtle, or more dramatic.

A Coronal browlift is suitable for patients who wish to lift the entire forehead. This procedure results in a dramatic lift of the eyebrows and flattening of the entire forehead skin and muscle. If there are long standing wrinkles in the forehead, these deep lines in the skin may need further superficial treatment, such as with laser resurfacing or a chemical peel and/or non-volumising wrinkle reduction treatment to soften the creases.

The incision for a coronal brow lift is placed just behind the hairline in the front of the scalp. The incision is well hidden in the soft fine hair in the hairline. There can be swelling on the forehead for a few months, following the procedure.

A Direct browlift is useful to correct asymmetry, or to lift a low sitting eyebrow that has begun to lie lower down due to ageing. The scar is usually just in the hairline above the eyebrows. If the eyebrows are asymmetrical, the amount of skin can be tailored to remove more skin from the lower side. A small, crescent shaped sliver of skin is removed near the hairline of the eyebrow and the eyebrow is moved upward. The incision is closed in the eyebrow-hair to help disguise the scar.

An Internal browpexy is a more subtle, yet simple technique, ideal for patients who feel that the outside third of the eyebrow has dropped over time, or they want the eyebrow shape to be slightly more peaked in the outer third. This procedure is often accompanied by an upper blepharoplasty as the browlift can be performed through the upper blepharoplasty incision. This is an option for patients who wish to have a shorter down-time and prefer a minimal healing period, and minimum scaring. The eyebrows are positioned and shaped according to patient preference. There is only one, very fine scar in the upper eyelid crease which is only visible when the eyelids are closed. The healing time for an internal browpexy is about a week and sutures are removed after about five to seven days.

A Gliding browlift, also known as a temporal browlift, is utilised when a more lateral browlift or dramatic result is desired. Gliding means the skin and eyebrow are separated off the underlying muscle and moved higher up on the forehead. There are usually three incisions for this procedure, they are all placed just behind the hairline: one on each side and one in the centre of the forehead. An ellipse of scalp skin may be removed if needed, however this is not always necessary. The skin and brow are then fixed to the muscle underneath with a type of quilting suture, which was developed in South America and first described by Dr André Auersvald hence it is referred to as the ‘A’ net or the ‘haemostatic net’ and it was adapted for the eyebrow by Brazil’s Dr Fausto Viterbo.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it last?

The duration of correction is of course dependent on individual patient lifestyle, age, general health, and skin health. It is prudent to say that the more dramatic the lift, as in the coronal browlift and direct browlift, the longer your results will last, most likely many years. For the more subtle techniques such as the gliding browlift or the internal browpexy the results may last fewer years, with a pleasing aesthetic result and a healing time of two to three weeks.

Recovery

The type of Browlift chosen will be a factor in your recovery time. All procedures are performed in an accredited hospital and you can go home on the same day. There will usually be some swelling and bruising and it is important to take it easy for the first few days. Depending on the incision, obvious swelling can last anywhere from one to six weeks. You can be slightly swollen internally for months, however that is not very noticeable. If you have an active lifestyle it is best to rest and take it easy, but, you can certainly go out and about after a day or two.

One week later

After a week, we take out your sutures and review your results, we will advise you when we see you next and monitor your recovery in person.

Complications

  • Asymmetry
  • Nerve damage, resulting in some forehead area numbness. (Temporary numbness is not considered a complication, rather it is an expected and natural sequelae of the operation).
  • Infection
  • Blood or fluid collection under the skin
  • Damage to underlying structures such as muscle or vessels
  • Poor wound healing
  • Poor scar

How much will my Browlift Cost ?

The Surgical Fee for a browlift will be between $2000 — $8000 depending on the type of browlift required, and whether you also desire to have a blepharoplasty at the same time. This fee above does not include the Hospital or the Anaesthetic Fee.
